Anti Aging Foods ... The Healthy Way to Combat Aging

Anti aging foods help your body fight the effects of aging?

Anti Aging FoodsThere are many ways to slow down the aging process. Many people resort to cosmetic surgery to keep their appearance youthful. New medical technologies such as anti-aging medication are also used to fend off the signs of aging.

An assortment of anti-aging techniques have also been discovered and introduced. But did you know that you don't have to undergo invasive surgery, take medication or practice a technique or two just to combat aging? By keeping your body healthy and nourishing it with anti-aging foods, you can halt the progress of aging and even reverse it.

Anti aging foods are a group of foods that have been found to help reverse the effects of aging while keeping the body healthy and nourished properly. Here are some highly recommended anti aging foods:

* Avocado – This fruit was once shunned because of its high fat content. Actually, the avocado is very rich in monounsaturated fat which helps keep the body's cholesterol level down. It is also rich in Vitamin E that helps keep the skin supple and youthful. The avocado's potassium content also prevents hypertension. The avocado can be served in many different ways including salads and even sandwiches.

* Berries – Free radicals is one of the main culprits of aging. Fortunately, you can fight free radicals with the anti-aging anti-oxidant-rich fruits such as blueberries, blackberries, and blackcurrants. The red grape is also rich in phytochemicals, although it is not a berry.

* Fish – Eat fish instead of red meat. Fish is healthier because it contains quality protein and fat. Fish is also rich in Omega 3 fatty acids that lowers the risk of heart disease and stimulates the immune system. A diet that consists mainly of fish can also lower the risk of esophageal, stomach and colorectal cancer.

* Carrots – This very nutritious vegetable is rich in beta-carotene, a very powerful antioxidant. Beta-carotene can fight aging and a number of diseases. It also reduces the risk of lung cancer. Beta-carotene also keeps vision sharp and clear and the immune system strong and healthy.

* Nuts – Raw nuts are a very rich source of vitamins and minerals such as zinc, potassium, iron, magnesium, copper and selenium. They are also rich in fiber. Nuts can help control cholesterol level and strengthen the immune system. However, they also contain high fat content so limit your nuts consumption to two tablespoon daily.

* Whole meal pasta and brown rice – These foods contain complex carbohydrates that provide energy to the body. Brown rice is rich in fiber and B-vitamins while whole meal pasta has high fiber and iron content.

* Water – Drinking eight glasses of water washes the toxins away from the body. It also keeps the skin smooth and supple. Aside from pure water, you can also drink sugar-free juices and herbal teas as well as eat water-rich fruits such as watermelon.

Mostly fruits and vegetables, these foods are rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients. By including these anti aging foods into your diet, your body will be better equipped to stop the physical effects of aging. If you haven't introduced the abovementioned anti aging foods to your diet, you should start now.

This morning, I bravely ventured into my crisper drawer and discovered an apple that must be six months old because I know I haven't eaten one since September, and some poor shriveled piece of fruit the size of a ping pong ball that I think may have once been a grapefruit. We all know how difficult it is to eat all of the suggested servings of fruit in a day. Most of us can only afford the time to go grocery shopping once a week. And it's certainly easy to pick up some fresh produce when you're there. The hard part is eating it before it starts to rot in the fridge.

If you've also excavated your fridge to find artifacts of past shopping trips, consider the delights of frozen fruit. I discovered frozen fruit this winter while lusting for berries. I love berries, but I don't love paying five dollars for the small handful of blueberries that come in those little half pint containers in the winter. On one particular trip to the store in the thick of January, I sadly passed by the fresh berries and wandered into frozen foods. There I found, to my delight, not only blueberries, but raspberries, strawberries, cherries, blackberries, even peaches! I picked up one bag of each and drove home gladly anticipating my new treat.

Anti Aging FoodsAfter several experiments with frozen fruits, I have a few regular snacks that I eat all the time. They are cheap, easy, fast, and healthy snacks:

1. Cherries and yogurt
Cherries are my favorite frozen fruit. They don't completely freeze, but remain somewhat soft and juicy. So, I eat them frozen with plain yogurt and a little honey. Plain yogurt is key here. Flavored yogurts contain so much sugar, there is little nutritional value to redeem them. Honey is a natural and more healthful sweetener and you can add as little or as much as you want to sweeten the snack.

2. Raspberries and chocolate
Frozen raspberries, thawed naturally, not in the microwave, are delicious with just a little bit of chocolate sauce. I particularly like the kind that makes a chocolate shell.

3. Freezing fresh fruit
If the limited variety of the frozen fruit doesn't satisfy you, freezing fresh fruit can make some tasty treats that last. Mango popsicles take a little extra effort, but are definitely worth it. Puree a couple of peeled and chopped fresh mango in a blender or food processor and use in homemade popsicle kits or go old school with an ice cube tray and toothpicks. Mangos contain so much natural sugar, there is no need for adding any extra. Kids will love this snack! You can almost always find fresh grapes at the grocery store, but they don't always taste nice. I found that even the worst grapes taste great when frozen. No need to make popsicles, just freeze and pop them like candy.

So, if you need to increase your fruit intake, try frozen. Frozen fruit treats are tasty, easy to make, and won't leave you playing the "what did that used to be?" game.

Exercise Is An Important Part Of Staying Young For Seniors

As boomers' parents age, complaints about joint and muscle pain increase. The energetic walk they used in earlier years may have slowed to a shuffle. Do not resign senior parents to a slow dwindle into infirmity. After the doctor gives them a check up, you can get elderly parents to exercise again. Starting slow and making it fun are the keys to a long and healthy life.

Get a Doctor's Help for Senior Exercise

Grown children of elderly parents should maintain communication with their parent's doctor. Get involved and learn about exercise recommendations. A doctor's orders may do more to convince a senior to exercise than a child's pleading.

Checking with the senior's doctor is the most important step in beginning an exercise regimen. A muscle strain or sprain takes longer to heal at a higher age. Do not plan a strenuous daily agenda of cardio and strength training. Doctors can recommend easy fitness routines that are better for aging patients.

Make Senior Exercise Fun

Just like their younger counterparts, senior citizens will not continue an exercise plan if it hurts or they do not enjoy it. One of the best exercises for the older generation is walking. Instead of buying your parent a treadmill or driving them to the track, consider events that can be fun while walking around. Take your mother to a botanical garden or craft show. Invite your father to a boating expo or a classic car show.

Focus on You for Senior Exercise

Never treat your elderly parent like a child. Do not dictate that they must begin to exercise for their own good. Instead of focusing on the senior citizen, focus on yourself. Not only can you tell your aging parent that you want them to be healthy to play with their grandchildren, inviting them on outings because you want them with you is more effective than saying it is because they must be active. Parents want to do things for their children. Even if they don't want to walk around a show, they might come with you for your own sake.

Improving a senior parent's quality of life is easy with some gentle and effective exercise. Not only will they satisfy their doctor's prescription for activity, they can enjoy spending more time with family members and friends. Start slow and make it fun are the right prescriptions for happy, healthy senior exercise.
