How Important is Nutrition?

Genewize Logo

So how important is nutrition?

Lets look at it this way...there are four areas of health you must address to help the body run optimally. Missing one area of the four can impact your overall results substantially in term of optimal performance.
  1. Rest/Sleep = 25%
  2. Exercise = 25%
  3. Diet = 25%
  4. 4. Nutrition =25%
Most people neglect the proper nutrients the most. It's very hard to get all to the nutrients and minerals your body needs in diet alone. This is often compensated with vitamins purchased at you local neighborhood pharmacy market.

Recently studies have shown that the right supplements and minerals can aid in preventing health issues you may be genetically predisposed to.

For most people, the typical day begins early and ends late. This can result in a chronic sense of fatigue and decreased productivity. If you are like many overworked and overtired Americans, you likely get too little sleep and rely on caffeinated beverages or energy bars to make it through the day. Unfortunately, these products can actually worsen your fatigue, as they often interfere with sleep and cause rebound tiredness.

Nutrition bars and energy drinks...

Nutritionare marketed to desperate people who are seeking relief from the pressures of today's hectic lifestyles. Typically, they promise to increase energy, boost alertness, provide nutrition, or improve concentration and productivity. However, if you look beyond the clever marketing campaigns and colorful packaging, most of these products contain little more than the ingredients found in a bottle of soda: caffeine and sugar.

Although most of these products are okay when used in moderation, frequent use can cause undesirable side effects that are often worse than the original fatigue they are used to combat.

A nutrition bar for breakfast, or the occasional energy drink after a long day of work, is not enough to cause negative effects. However, if you have reached the point where you rely on these products everyday, or have noticed rebound side effects when you go several hours without consuming one of these items, you are likely using these products more than you should.

Because these products typically contain excessive sugar and calories, they can cause weight gain, jitteriness, and even trigger the development of diabetes in susceptible people. Additionally, the caffeine found in energy drinks is a stimulant that can result in headaches, insomnia, and stomach problems. Caffeine is both physically and psychologically addicting, and can cause considerable withdrawal effects for several days when discontinued abruptly.

Another issue with these products is that they tend to work their way so deeply into the diet that they begin to replace other, healthier meals. Although most nutrient bars and some energy drinks contain an assortment of vitamins and minerals, they cannot provide your body with the amount and type of nutrition needed for your body to run efficiently over a long period of time. Adolescents who rely on nutrient bars as a type of meal replacement may not grow or develop properly and may suffer from osteoporosis later in life due to insufficient calcium and vitamin D intake.

The claims made by the manufacturers of many of these products can be misleading and even dangerous. While a nutrition bar or an occasional energy drink when you need a quick pick-me-up is okay, reliance on these products can cause long-term damage to your health and happiness. If you find yourself reaching for one of these products several or more times per week, it is probably time to schedule a meeting with your doctor to discuss healthier alternatives.

Supplemental nutrition has done wonders for me, and over the years I have experienced nothing but very positive affects from using the best products available.

I feel good everyday, I sleep better, have lots of energy, and have been able to maintain and manage my weight, blood pressure and cholesterol easily by adding customized nutrients to my ab diet. I also enjoy having a good sense of well being during very stressful times. “Aging is the Challenge – Nourishing Your Cells is the Solution” I am a result of that.

Nutritional Tips for Losing Weight

NutritionAt first glance, the formula for losing weight seems quite simple: Consume less calories than you burn. In practice, however, losing weight is not simple at all. Despite what all of the fad diets and weight-loss books would have you believe, there is no quick fix to being overweight or out of shape. While Losing Weight (and keeping it off!) requires willpower, hard work, and diligence, there are some nutritional tricks you can use to make the process as painless as possible.

Eat the Right Foods in the Right Combinations

Food choice is obviously a very important part of your nutritional plan. Care should be taken to avoid fatty foods with little nutritional value. Try to eliminate things like cream sauces, mayonnaise, and cheese from your diet. Many fatty foods can be substituted with low- or no-fat alternatives with no perceptible taste difference. Try using olive oil to cook with instead of butter, selecting lean cuts of meat, and eating more low-fat poultry and fish. Avoid fried food and “quick and easy” prepared foods, since most are extremely high in fat and sodium. Also, every meal you eat should contain a combination of protein and carbohydrates. Your body works best when given a balance of protein and carbohydrates, and combining them in every meal will help your body process the food you eat more efficiently.

Eat Several Small Meals during the Day

The faster your metabolism is running, the more calories you will burn during the day. Aside from exercise, the best way to keep your metabolism running at its peak is to keep it working all day long. The traditional American diet of breakfast, lunch, and dinner means there are long stretches of time between meals. During these periods, the body’s metabolism slows – in fact, if you go too long without food, your body will go into a “starvation mode” where it consumes as few calories as possible.

Eating five or six small meals throughout the day...

keeps your metabolism running constantly, resulting in more calories consumed. Eating in this manner also keeps your blood sugar and energy levels nice and steady. A sample day’s menu might include a light breakfast (egg whites and toast), a mid-morning snack (yogurt with fruit), a sensible lunch (turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread), an afternoon snack (carrot and celery sticks), dinner (baked chicken with rice and vegetables), and a light snack before bedtime (cottage cheese and fruit). The goal is not to gorge yourself on food all day long, but to give your body a constant supply of quality fuel so your metabolism runs in high gear around the clock.

Drink Lots of Water

Many health experts advocate drinking sixty-four ounces of water per day. Drinking the proper amount of water helps your body in many ways, and it can help you shed weight as well! Replacing high-calorie beverages with water is a simple way to cut a large amount of calories from your daily diet – an 8 oz glass of fruit juice contains around 130 calories, and a 12 oz can of Coca-Cola contains close to 200! In addition, drinking water helps control hunger. Drinking the proper amount of water during the day will fill your stomach and reduce hunger pangs, as well as satisfy any dehydration signals your body is sending out. When the human body is dehydrated, it can manifest that need physically as a feeling of hunger instead of thirst. Many times, when you are feeling hungry, it might be your body asking you to drink something instead of eating something! With all of the health benefits associated with drinking water, this tip should become a part of your daily routine.

Give Yourself a Free Day

It is very important to realize you do not have to give up your favorite “bad foods” – they just can’t be a staple in your Diet. Any nutritional plan you put yourself on is destined for failure if it forces you to forever give up the foods you love. One great way to keep on track is to give yourself a “free day” where you are allowed to eat anything you want. After six days of staying on your plan and eating well, take a day off and indulge – eat whatever you like with no restrictions at all. Using the free day method will keep you from feeling deprived and will provide motivation on the other six days. Also, a funny thing can happen – as you stick to your healthy eating, you might find you don’t even want those unhealthy foods when your free day rolls around! Eating properly will give you so many positive results that you just may find yourself deciding to stick with the plan all seven days!

Losing weight is not easy - especially in today’s on-the-go society where health often takes a backseat to other obligations. However, by taking advantage of these nutritional tips, you will give yourself an advantage in the “battle of the bulge.” Sticking to a plan and taking care to select the proper foods, drink a lot of water, eat several small meals during the day, and enjoy the “bad foods’ in moderation will yield results you will both see and feel. A proper nutritional plan, especially when combined with regular exercise, is the only diet solution you will ever need.

Herbal Supplements: A warning for patients who take blood thinners

Millions of health conscience adults, who intend to ward off anything "man-made", turn toward the all natural health stores for alternative medications. While having good intentions for seeking out natural cures for what ails them, most people do not realize that herbal supplements and all natural alternatives are not regulated, therefore, creating a possibility of various levels of medicinal herbs to react within the body.

Recent years have produced more health conscience adults. While being health conscience is a great lifestyle to practice, adults tend to load up on many herbal supplements in attempt to prevent as many diseases and afflictions as possible. The most popular herbs taken in the United States are probably the most harmful when mixed together or when mixed with prescription drugs. Four of the most commonly used herbal supplements work to improve blood circulation. In short, taking these medicinal herbs may cause internal bleeding and should never be taken with prescription blood thinners.
v 1. Ginseng: Ginseng is the most commonly used herb, taken by millions of people each day in the form of tea or in a pill. It is commonly thought to increase energy levels and boost the immune system. Advocates of the herb claim a variety of unsupported health benefits including preventing heart disease as well as cancer. There are no supporting evidence or research findings that prove the effectiveness of ginseng. It has been proven however, to decrease the efficiency of blood thinning drugs.

2. Gingko Biloba: For years, many herbal advocates declared that taking gingko biloba would increase memory and concentration levels. While it does have some positive effects in Alzheimer's patients, it does not aid in memory retention nor does it improve concentration. Gingko biloba works to improve blood flow and increases circulation, therefore, should not be taken with blood thinner medications.

3. Garlic Supplement: Proven to have great benefits in reducing blood pressure as well as fighting infection, garlic supplements work to reduce platelet aggregation, which is why garlic supplements are so effective. Avoid taking garlic supplements if you are taking blood thinning drugs.

4. Feverfew: Feverfew is a medicinal herb that is proven to effectively relieve migraine headaches. It also causes the body to react adversely to blood thinning drugs.

To prevent any unforeseen situations, it is always best to consult your physician before starting a herbal regimen and never treat serious medical conditions with herbs.
